How to Find Award Winning Children's and Young Adult Literature

There are many awards and honors bestowed on children's and young adult literature.  Below are just a few along with a search to find winners in our library collection.  Search for both the name of the award and the code that indicates the juvenile collection, “sucz.”

Caldecott to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children

Newbery to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children

Batchelder for the most outstanding children’s book originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States, and subsequently translated into English for publication in the United States

Coretta Scott King to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values

Pura Belpré to the Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth

Tomás Rivera honoring books that depict the Mexican American experience
