    Chances are you'll find a PDF of the dissertation. Coverage begins in 1948 to the present

    Lots of ways to search! Use the pull-down box to search by author, advisor, committee member, department or by other options.

    Lots more is searched. In an advanced search, the default Anywhere looks for your search terms in all fields—including any available abstract or full text—of all documents

    Names can sometimes be tricky. If searching by author, use the Look Up Authors feature that appears once you select Author in the pull-down.

    Department names may have changed over time, biology vs. biological sciences for example.

Scholar Commons, the University's Institutional Repository

  • Scholar Commons
    Dissertations beginning in 2009 are deposited in Carolina's institutional repository.

    For earlier documents, per agreement with the Graduate School, dissertations in Scholar Commons can only be accessed from an on-campus computer with IP address beginning 129.252. and may not be used via the proxy. USC affiliated users can access the Dissertations & Theses database. Later theses and dissertations deposited in Scholar Commons will be open access, available to anyone from anywhere.

Advanced Search

If the library has a physical copy of a dissertation, you'll find out by searching the library catalog. The catalog also includes dissertations that are available electronically.

Looking by author? Use an author search, starting with the last name.

Looking by topic? Abstracts and the full document in Dissertations & Theses@University of South Carolina are searchable, so you may have better results searching there.

Looking by department? Remember department names can change. All USC dissertations are given a subject heading: University of South Carolina--Theses--name of the department/college

Getting a copy. There may be a copy you can check out in Thomas Cooper Library.  If the location is listed as Columbia Annex: Ask at South Caroliniana Library (Library Use Only), patrons must request retrieval of materials by contacting the South Caroliniana Library directly at Include the call number, author, and title in your message. Requests for South Caroliniana Library's Annex materials take at least 24 hours to fill. Materials are used only in the South Carolinana Library, and patrons must register and provide photo ID on their first visit. South Caroliniana Library hours.
