Connecting with USC Libraries

Your Library ID

You'll use your USC network username and password to use library resources and services online.  Information on delivery services is on the Off-Campus Access page.

Translate a topic into search terms

  • Brainstorm:
    • STEM education, science instruction, science education, technology instruction, technology education, engineering instruction, engineering education, mathematics instruction, mathematics education
    • high school, secondary, adolescence, adolescents, teens, teenagers
  • Do some searches and pay close attention to the subject words used in the databases
  • Use the thesaurus (the subjects) in Education Source and ERIC.  Watch the video to see it in action.

Using the thesaurus

In this video, the screens for entering your network username and password look different, but the process is the same.

Tips for most databases

AND    all terms must be present, narrows a search

OR      use on the same line/search box, any of the terms

*         wildcard for different endings.  EBSCO interface (Education Source and ERIC) automatically retrieves simple plurals.

" "       search exact phrases by surrounding with quotation marks

Where to search

Search within a journal

If we get a journal online from a publisher, you can search the entire text of just that journal.  Some good options for this class are linked below.  Know of another journal?  Do a journal search in Find It with the title to see what your access options are.

Getting a hold of books

Whether you want to pick up the books from Thomas Cooper Library or have them mailed to you, when you sign in to Find It@USC Libraries you'll see a link to "Request."   Use the "PASCAL Delivers" pull -down in Find It@USC Libraries to request books from other academic libraries in the state.  We'll mail them too!
