When I save a reference to my library, some information is missing in the Details tab (e.g., volume, issue, page numbers).

Solution:

  1. Locate the reference in your library.
  2. Right-click on the reference and select "Update Details"
  3. The missing information will populate in the correct fields.

Issue:

When I import a reference through BibTex, RIS, or XML, the PDF does not attach to the reference.

Common Error Messages and Solutions

Error Message:

"Citation/Bibliography is wrongly placed in index area, please delete the placed citation/bibliography in index area"

Explanation:

You may receive this error message if you are working in a Word document that has in-text citations or a bibliography inserted using a citation plugin from another reference manager (e.g., EndNote or Zotero), as Mendeley is unable to detect citations made from other reference managers.

Solution:

  1. When you get the error message, click OK. (Notice that the cursor stops blinking and it may take you to a different page or it will highlight the bad reference.)
  2. Hit the delete button until you notice what text is being deleted. Word should have taken you to the bad reference. It may or may not be a hidden reference, so you can only find it by deleting.
  3. Re-insert the reference from your Mendeley library.
