"An ISSN is an 8-digit code used to identify newspapers, journals, magazines and periodicals of all kinds and on all media–print and electronic." The role of an ISSN is to help identify, locate, and organize publications for researchers, librarians, and other users.
You can use the Journal Finder to find titles of specific journals we have in our collection.
Example: The journal Education has two possible options; Education (Guilford, Conn.) physical copies available in Thomas Cooper from 1980-1981
OR
Education (Chula Vista, Calif.) available online from 1969-2023.
If I am looking for a relevant article for my research I would choose the second option since it has more coverage and is easily accessible. However, if I am looking for a specific article or need to use that specific journal I may need to check both options or do more research to find which journal is the correct one.
**Searching using the ISSN will be more accurate by finding the EXACT journal you are looking for. To find your journal using the ISSN you will type the full ISSN into the search box instead of the title of the journal.
Many journals have a way you can set up an alert to be notified when a new journal issue or articles from a saved search have been published. You can save searches and set alerts in Find It@USC and article databases too.
