ASTM and ISO Standards

Scientific Primary and Secondary Sources

Primary sources = Original Research, Discussion, or Ideas
  • Written by the scientist(s) or researcher(s) who conducted the experiment or study
  • Original work submitted to a governing body (i.e. standards or patents)
  • Should include sections detailing how the research was performed such as methodology, results, and discussion/conclusions
    • Ex: standards, studies or surveys, patents, conference proceedings, and technical reports 
Secondary sources = Define, Summarize, Review, or Compare
  • Authors did not conduct the research studies which are mentioned or cited in the article themselves
  • Purpose is to define, summarize, review, or compare the published research on a specific topic
    • Ex: systematic reviews, handbooks, tables, and dictionaries

Step 1: Find the standard

To search through a variety of standards, use the following links to gather the information needed to find a copy through the library

Step 2: Access the standard

The best way to search for both ISO standards and ASTM standards would be through FindIt on our library website. Down below are some examples of what to enter if trying to access standards this way:

  • Title: "Unalloyed aluminium ingots for remelting — Classification and composition"
    • Note: the " " allow the search to only look at those words in that exact order, allowing for a more exact search
  • ASTM code: E2792-21
  • ICS code: 77.120.10
  • DOI: 10.1520/E2792-21 
To make sure you are seeing all we have to offer, make sure you toggle "add results available through Interlibrary Loan" and Resource Type > Standards. If what you want is available through Interlibrary Loan, you can request it and we will get it to you in a few days.

 

Under Refine my results on the lefthand side of FindIt @ USC, toggle the option for "add results available by interlibrary loan"

Can't find what you want?

If no results are coming up, even after following the directions above, you will need to place an interlibrary loan for the text that you want. Our library will work to find a copy of that standard or article and will get you a PDF copy of it for free.
