Medical account books, 1845-1885, documenting life during antebellum era, Civil War, and Reconstruction, include "List of funds collected at Allendale, [S.C.] ..." 10 Jan. 1860, in paying for and outfitting his plantation and relocating to land in Ogeechee, G.A..Volume, 1860-1870, includes account of violence during Reconstruction, "A Bloody Tragedy" re appointment of an African-American magistrate during term of Gov. Robert Kingston Scott (1868-1872); and scrapbook volume, 1872-1885, with clippings, ca. 1885, discussing local option re alcohol sales in Barnwell County, S.C. Medical diploma, 15 Mar. 1845, awarded by Medical College of the State of South Carolina, Charleston. Latin text, with signatures of faculty members.

Letter, 29 July 1868, from A[melia A. DeWalt] Johnstone, to her son George, reporting news of severe drought in the Newberry area, state politics, and race relations during Reconstruction.

Family correspondence, legal documents, and other items of family members in the lowcountry, and the counties of Darlington, Kershaw, and elsewhere in South Carolina. Chiefly sermons and other papers of Methodist minister Whatcoat Asbury Gamewell (1814-1869), including manuscript, Oct. 1835, "A Visit to the Jews Synagogue," documenting account of his visit to a Charleston synagogue; letter, 25 Mar. 1866, relating details of an arson fire which destroyed the public square in Darlington, S.C., and noting rumor that the destruction would continue.

Sams family papers, 1784-1934 and 1960, spanning Early National Period, antebellum, and Civil War era into 20th century in South Carolina; consisting of family letters, business papers, and genealogical information related to Miles Brewton Sams and his family, including volume, 1837-1870, recording births in the Sams family and births among the African American slaves and freedmen.

Correspondence, bills, receipts, land papers, legal papers, addresses, and other papers of the Chesnut and Manning families reflecting the social and economic life of S.C. and containing much information on political issues, including nullification, secession, Civil War, Reconstruction, etc. By connections of blood and marriage, collection also contains in smaller portions papers of the related Cantey, Hampton, Miller, Richardson, and Williams families, a kinship group which produced six governors and other prominent statesmen.
