Kanopy: Access for Streaming Films

Learn how University Libraries provides access to films with the Kanopy streaming service.

Kanopy is a streaming video platform that provides access to licensed streaming films and documentaries on a wide array of topics.

Changes to Kanopy

As of February 28, 2021, University Libraries changed to a mediated access model for Kanopy. What does this mean?

  • Films that have already been licensed will continue to be available until the expiration of the license
  • Unlicensed films will not be immediately available
  • Requests for new Kanopy film licenses will only be purchased for faculty or instructors to provide required course material

This mediated model gives University Libraries much more control of the spending on Kanopy film licenses.

Though we have shifted away from our previous access model, University Libraries remains committed to supporting course materials across campus and will work with faculty and instructors to provide film access for their students.

If you are using a film for a course and are concerned about the film's expiration date, please review the list of currently-licensed films on this page. For questions about using Kanopy for a course or other film streaming services, please contact Christian Lear at
