Understanding Primary and Secondary Sources

Primary sources = Evidence

  • Created during the time period or event you are studying, or produced by a participant (even if after the fact)
  • Primary sources are defined by how they are used (i.e. as evidence for interpretation of the past) rather than by what they are (i.e. format or type of material)

Secondary sources = Analysis and interpretation

  • Written by historians, scholars, and other researchers
  • Secondary sources are based on the analysis and interpretation of primary evidence and other sources

Search Tips

Library databases search best by using keywords to describe the major aspects of your topic. Some search tips to keep in mind when searching library resources:

  • Use keywords that best describe your research question or topic.
  • Try multiple searches and experiment with related terms.  
  • Sometimes less is more.  If your search has a lot of aspects to it, focus on a few of the most important terms.
  • Pay attention to subject terms or descriptors located in article databases and Find It @ USC.  These terms will give you ideas for other keywords.

 

Constructing a Keyword Search:

AND both terms must be present:     "south carolina" AND nullification

OR either term may present:     nullification OR tariffs                                                                                                                             

*truncation, finds characters beyond the root word/searches for various endings: politicwill search for politic, politics, as well as political

Use quotations to search for an exact phrase: "south carolina"
