EDSE 850 Advanced Readings in Secondary Education (STEM)

Connecting with UofSC Libraries

Your Library ID

You'll use your UofSC network username and password to use library resources and services online and your Carolina Card to check out books (when that's possible).  You can get pretty far doing library research without a Carolina Card, but if you are at a distance see the Off Campus Access page for info on how to get a Library ID card from Distributed Learning.

Translate a topic into search terms

  • Brainstorm:
    • STEM education, science instruction, science education, technology instruction, technology education, engineering instruction, engineering education, mathematics instruction, mathematics education
    • high school, secondary
  • Do some searches and pay close attention to the subject words used in the databases
  • Use the thesaurus (the subjects) in Education Source and ERIC.  Watch the video to see it in action.

Tips for any database

AND    all terms must be present, narrows a search

OR      use on the same line, any of the terms

Education databases

At this time, getting a hold of books

While the library is closed it isn't possible to borrow print books, but we do have e-books.  Some that may be of interest:

For more options, take a look at the Free Research Resources section of the Library Support during COVID-19/Coronavirus Closure guide.

In the future

When the library opens again, one of our services is mailing books to people outside of Richland and Lexington counties.  Information on book delivery and article delivery (articles we don't have in our collections and articles/book chapters we only have available in print) is on the Off Campus Access webpage.  You don't have to be at a distance for the article delivery services.

Coming June 1.  Find It will be the library's new platform to search the library's collections, online and print.  Use Advanced Search to create the same searches you'd do in the education databases.  Try it along with using the education databases!

Use Ask a Librarian.  During the summer the service is available  Monday - Thursday, 9:00am-  6:00pm, Friday 9:00am - 4:00pm, Sunday 2:00pm - 6:00 pm (eastern daylight time).

You can also email me directly or schedule a virtual appointment with me.  Contact information is in my box on the left.
