Poised for the sesquicentennial remembrance of the Civil War, South Carolina and the Civil War brings together eyewitness views and accounts of this period of American history, selected from the rich holdings of University of South Carolina Libraries.

This collection contains the mementos Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Franklin Eshleman, a former commander of the Washington Artillery battalion, saved in his scrapbook.

Transcribed collection of Civil War letters written by soldier from Lancaster District, S.C., that discuss typical concerns of a soldier, such as troop movements, reports of sickness, and news of friends and relatives; places represented include four or more locations in each of the following states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, and Virginia. A number of the letters included in this volume do not appear among the collection of original letters written by W.L. Faulkner held by SCL.

Manuscript, 10 November 1865, New York, recounting Minor's Civil War experiences as a member of the "5th Cav[alry] N.Y."--Supplied on a blank sent by the Bureau of Military Records according to provision by the N.Y. Legislature to "procure a detailed account to the treatment of Union soldiers ... in rebel prisons ... and other pertinent facts connected with such imprisonment."

Photocopy of undated narrative relating experience with Union General Kirkpatrick's raiders in Chapel Hill, N.C., and her audience with President Andrew Johnson to plead for Jefferson Davis' life.
